Charged device model (CDM) ESD is considered to be the primary real-world ESD model for representing ESD charging and rapid discharge and is the best representation of what can occur in automated handling equipment used in manufacturing and the assembly of integrated circuits (ICs) today. It is well known that the largest cause by far of ESD damage to an IC during device handling in a manufacturing environment is from charged device events.

Prior to ANSI/ESDA/JEDEC JS-002, there were four existing standards: the legacy

  • JEDEC (JESD22-C101),
  • ANSI/ESD S5.3.1,
  • AEC Q100-011,
  • EIAJ ED-4701/300-2

MIL-STD-331, Munitions & Fuzes (500pF, 500/5000Ohm)

Resistance and Capacitance modules are found in many Military and DOD electrostatic immunity test requirements, many of which refer back to MIL-STD-331. The 500pF, 500 and 5000 Ohm discharge networks are suitable to meet STANAG 4239, MIL-DTL-23659D and MIL-STD-1512.

Human Body Model - HBM-(100pF/1500Ohm)

Human Body Model (HBM) ESD testing is a requirement in compliance standards IEC 612340-3-1, JEDEC 11-A114, MIL-STD-750D and many more. RC modules with 150pF capacitance and 1500 Ohm resistance values are typically used with 30kV model ESD simulators and their easily interchangeable discharge network design. The new Haefely ONYX 30 and 3ctest EDS 20T are 16kV models with easily changeable RC modules, saving users money on the overall HBM and MM configuration

Automotive test standards ISO 10605 and SAE J113/13 are a 4 network combination of resistance (330/2K Ohm) and capacitance (150/330 pF) values. All major automotive manufacturers have specified electromagnetic compliance standards such as the Ford FMC1278, GMW 3100, and many more that reference one of the international standards.

Machine Model (MM) ESD testing is a requirement in compliance standards IEC 612340-3-2, JEDEC 11-A115, and many more. RC modules with 200pF capacitance and zero Ohm resistance values are typically used with 30kV model ESD simulators and their easily interchangeable discharge network design. The new Haefely ONYX 16 and 3ctest EDS 20T are 16kV models with easily changeable RC modules, saving users money on the overall HBM and MM configuration
